10th ISSA CONFERENCE ON ARGUMENTATION
Much to our regret, the continuing virus crisis makes it impossible to have the 10th ISSA Conference and the preceding ILIAS Colloquium on the dates that were planned in 2022. It goes without saying that we are very disappointed about this sad state of affairs, but unfortunately it cannot be helped.
To remain on the safe side, we intend to postpone the ISSA Conference to 28-30 June of the next year (2023). The preceding ILIAS Colloquium will take place on 26 June 2023. Again, a Summer Institute for PhD students and other interested argumentation scholars will be organised right after the Conference. As originally planned, all these events will take place at Jiangsu University in Jiangsu University, Zhenjiang, China. (You can view the proceedings of the 2018 ISSA conference here)
All earlier acceptances of presentations at the ISSA Conference and participation in the ILIAS Colloquium or the Summer Institute will be maintained. Additional applications for presentations or participation will be welcome. In due course the new time schedule will be announced on our website.
The keynote speakers are:
- Isabela Fairclough (University of Central Lancashire, UK)
- Robert Rowland (University of Kansas, US)
- Christopher Tindale (University of Windsor, Canada)
ISSA Conferences as an International Meeting Place
From the start in 1986, the ISSA Conferences have been an international meeting place of argumentation scholars from all over the world who are interested in getting to know their fellows, irrespective of these colleagues’ academic preferences and the policies of the countries they live in. Because the Planning Committee wants to maintain this tradition, they keep the 10 th ISSA Conference in 2023 the way it always was and do not make it into an online conference or “hybrid”.
The conference themes include:
Argumentation and cognitive studies
Argumentation and discourse analysis
Argumentation and epistemology
Argumentation and rhetoric
Empirical research of argumentation
Argumentation and culture
Argumentation in a legal context
Argumentation in a medical context
Argumentation in an academic context
Argumentation in a political context
Argumentation in AI
Argumentation in debate
Argumentation in the media Intercultural argumentation
Summer Institute: From July 4 to July 6, 2023, a series of lectures will be provided for PhD students and other advanced students of argumentation. This lecture series will be coordinated by Frans van Eemeren, who will also be one of the lecturers. The program will be published later on our website.
International arrivals: Zhenjiang is a city near Nanjing and not far from Shanghai, both of which can be reached easily by international airlines. These two cities are certainly worth a longer visit before or after the conference. Among their touristic attractions are: the Confucius Temple and the Mausoleum of Sun Yat-sen, who is viewed as the father of modern China (Nanjing), and the Bund, the famous boulevard along the river Yang Tse, and Xintiandi (Shanghai). If desired, on July 2, some Chinese students who speak English can show you around in small groups.
Transportation: There is easy transport by train both from Nanjing to Zhenjiang and from Shanghai to Zhenjiang. In addition, we will make sure that on June 28 there are some shuttle buses available that can take you from Nanjing Lukou International Airport or Shanghai Pudong International Airport to the campus of Jiangsu University, and on July 2, 2023, they can take you back.
Hotel accommodation: From June 27 to July 2, 2023, housing will be provided on campus at the University Hotel of Jiangsu University. This arrangement will be included in the conference fee. If you want to stay in Nanjing or Shanghai before or after the conference, you can easily book your own hotel accommodation in accordance with your own wishes via the Internet.
Meals: As you will know, China has a famous and multi-varied cuisine, and meals are not expensive. During the conference, all meals will be provided to the participants of the conference on campus. This is included in the conference fee.
The Conference fee for the 10th ISSA Conference, which includes all meals (lunch, dinner) during the three days of the conference and a city tour, is € 375 (or $ 440 or RMB 2800 Yuan), and € 200 (or $ 235 or RMB 1500 Yuan) for PhD researchers and MA-students. The conference fee can be paid in cash or by debit or credit card (Visa, Master) at registration in Zhenjiang. Registration takes place on June 28, 2023 at the University Hotel of Jiangsu University. Because of the need to make fixed arrangements with Jiangsu University in advance, these prices are only for those who make an Early Bird pre-registration between April 1 and May 1, 2023. All others will have to pay 10 percent more.
